Single IRB

Reliance Agreements

A reliance agreement is an agreement between two or more institutions that allows one Institutional Review Board (IRB) to rely on another, unrelated IRB for the review of human subjects’ research. This practice of relying on an unrelated IRB is commonly referred to as ceded review, reliance agreements, or deferral of IRB oversight.

On January 25, 2018, the NIH issued a single IRB policy as a contingency for research that involves federal funding. This applies to initial, resubmission and renewal applications for federal funding opportunities.
